The implementation of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) relies principally on the alliance with local communities, that enriches not only the project results but the experience during its process. Speaking specifically on the experience of the EbA project CuencasVerdes (= Green Basins), the consultation process made so far by Pronatura Mexico with communities from the Valley of Mexico basin has shown that the uniqueness of the work done by people is directly related to a strong commitment to their values, people and nature. They have opened up about their experiences with the land they work and how climate irregularities have been present in the past years, which is elemental for the research phase of the project. The implementation of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) relies principally on the alliance with local communities, that enriches not only the project results but the experience during its process.
Consultation with different communities for implementation of the programme
This has allowed the Pronatura Mexico team to immerse in the lives of these people and to understand what they are expecting from CuencasVerdes, which facilitates an appropriate response to their specific needs and a collaborative work process, not only in Mexico but in the other three countries involved – Guatemala, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
CuencasVerdes is a project financed by the International Climate Change Initiative with resources from the Federal Ministry of Environment of Germany. It aims to promote the implementation of Ecosystem-based Adaptation measures in priority basins of Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, through capacity building of local communities, the development of governance mechanisms, management with key actors for the generation of additional financing, awareness of water-dependent sectors and impact on public policies.
