Public-private partnership to improve agricultural practices in Mexico

By Vania Olmos Lau, Commission Member, IUCN CEM Young Professionals Network.

The private sector holds immense power to activate change. They have solid structures and resources; increasingly, the private sector has the interest and will to activate business for the common good.

Alas para el Campo is a public-private partnership between GIZ and BASF in Mexico. It aims to increase the implementation of good agricultural practices favouring the Monarch Butterfly and other pollinators. We are working together with the National Commission on Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) to increase the capacity of farmers and other relevant stakeholders within these territories.

We will be working in 3 pilot sites within three protected areas where the Monarch Butterfly travels or hibernates and where agriculture is a significant activity: Barrancas de Metztitlán Biosphere Reserve, Nevado de Toluca Flora and Fauna Protection Area and Valle de Bravo Natural Resources Protection Area.
